Neural Stem Cell Markers
Neural stem cells (NSCs) offer a unique and powerful tool for basic research and regenerative medicine. Changes in the expression levels of specific molecules help identify the presence of neural stem cells in studies focused on further differentiation toward distinct neural lineages.
NSCs primarily differentiate into neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes, depending on environmental cues.
Several markers are used to identify NSCs such as
Nestin: Nestin is an intermediate filament protein expressed in neural stem and progenitor cells.
Sox2 (Sex-determining region Y-box 2): Sox2 is a transcription factor associated with the maintenance of neural stem cell properties.
Pax6 (Paired box 6): Pax6 is a transcription factor involved in the regulation of neural stem cell proliferation and differentiation.
Musashi-1: Musashi-1 is an RNA-binding protein expressed in neural stem and progenitor cells, playing a role in maintaining their undifferentiated state.
N-cadherin: N-cadherin is a cell adhesion molecule that plays a role in the maintenance of neural stem cell niches.
These markers, among others, are used in combination to characterize and isolate neural stem cells for research and potential therapeutic applications.
